With less than 1% of precincts reporting, The Associated Press has already called it - John McCain has won the Republican Primary for Senate in Arizona.
John McCain didn't so much win this election as J. D. Hayworth lost this election. Hayworth has greatly damaged what once was a promising political career with a handful of gaffes, and a little help from McCain running a commercial about an infomercial.
Six more years.... ugh. We're sorry, America.

The good thing... He is old, I doubt he will run again next time.
What is it with these people they just can't bow out gracefully? Kennedy died in office, Byrd died in office, Murtha died in office, Spectre left kicking and clawing to stay in, and you have a bunch of others who are in their 80's and late 70's.
As for McCain, he was once an American hero. Today, he's lost the respect of many of those same Americans who once revered him. He's to be pitied, really. I don't know what happened out there in AZ, but I sure do hope it's not a glimpse of what's to come in November.
As long as he doesn't run for President again.

After giving it some thought, I'll support McCain of course, because to give a leftist incumbency would be worse than what we'll get from McCain.

Don't be so quick to call Jan Brewer the end-all, either.
Although she's been better than average on SB 1070, she did fully support the largest tax increase in Arizona history.
Granted that tax increase was voted in by the citizens, but when you've got a Governor saying you need to increase taxes, moderates and leftists jump all over that.
And we've had a massive influx of California leftists (and idiots) over the past 10 years or so, since Cali really went to Hell in a hand-basket.

I think it was all clearly exemplified recently when 70-year-old San-Fran-Nan didn't want to raise the retirement age.
Yet she's 70.
I don't think AZ is a microcosm of November in America. McCain is sort of a different sort of story.
Like you said, he's been well respected, and I suspect many held their nose and voted for him believing they were offering their "due respects," especially after he lost the race for POTUS.
That and the fact that J. D. really just flat out screwed the pooch. Blago could have run a better race than Hayworth ran, in my honest opinion.
I was a big Hayworth supporter, and he almost lost my vote at one point. That's sad.

I agree... but I think he's done with presidential runs.
Now about that reaching across the aisle stuff... I for one will be keeping an eye on him, and writing him letters every time he missteps.
Unfortunately, though, many here believe this is his last term and that he won't be held accountable, yet he'll have that politician's goal of putting his name on some massive piece of legislation.
Why on Earth can't politicians understand that the best politicians are the ones who do nothing and leave us the Hell alone?!?!

As I mentioned to Sue up-thread, we've had a massive influx of loony-leftists from Cali, ever since your economy began to crap out a few years back. Parts of southwestern Phoenix are like little versions of South-Central, and Scottsdale and Chandler (the well-to-do areas) are like Santa Monica or Beverly Hills these days.
And we have Raul Grijalva down Tucson way.. you know, the ASS who called for a boycott of his own home state?
I laugh and think unkind thoughts every time I drive past one of McCain's billboards that tries to con us into believing that he's working to secure our borders.
