To My Dad

I've learned more from you than I'll ever know.

You didn't even have to teach me. I just had to watch and listen.

You let me choose my own path. I didn't always take your advice, but that's okay. I know that even though you watched me make mistakes and it probably ate at you inside, you wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I now understand that you were allowing me to learn from my mistakes, which ultimately has made me a better, stronger person.

While my life has not brought fatherhood my way, should I ever become a parent I could only hope to be half the Dad that you are to me.

Today if I ever wonder what is the right thing to do, I ask myself, "What would Dad do in this situation?"

Thank you, Dad - for all that you have done, and for all that you continue to do. You are my role model, and for that I am eternally grateful.

I love you. Happy Father's Day.

i remember when the wife got pregnant for the first time. i called dad and told him i didn't think i was ready to be a dad. i was in my mid-30's. he said no one thinks they're ready. i asked what i should do and he said do your best.

they (we) learn so much, even by just watching. i don't think the guys from dads generation ever realized this. he taught me lots, often times without even speaking.

great post, glad you are back.

Every year I try to close the gap between me and my father-

A lot of things have worked against it and that includes his own demeanor.

However, reading that post has also brought something into the foreground- We learn a lot from our parents and are often led to the understanding that there was a reason for everything in our lives.

I hope I can actually have a painless conversation with my dad one day.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there.

Well said. Kinda makes me wish I'd had more to say to my dad when I called him than, "How's retirement? What's that new dog you got up to?"

I often ask myself the same thing...
What would my dad do?
It's a great meter to live by.

Hooray, for Dads who have been great examples for their children!
